south florida is a very diverse place. we felt lost in miami and its little havana. we were minority and couldn't find place to crash for a night because we were white and couldn't speak spanish.
everglades are very interesting place worth exploring. we drove around and found strange campground like cut out from 80's. somewhat well used beach washrooms were clean. guys sitting on the beach pretending to fish. very quiet. and cheap. i think i will retire there. if i can find it again :-)
florida keys are 52 islands connected by bridges that go to the southernmost point of the usa. very cool drive, many beaches along the way and campgrounds with ocean view. no wonder you have to make reservations year ahead.
on the way to the airport we stopped at the gas station. the gas bar attendant luckily spoke some english but he was stoned to death. after i helped him to add up gas, munchies and a coffee i asked whether he had coffee lid for the styrofoam cup. the only lid i could find was one with straw hole in the middle for cold drinks. he said without any hesitation: no, i don't , but dis iz amerika and we du anyzing for castumer. and he took the lid off of my coffee cup, grabbed scissors and cut out an opening similar to the ones that coffee lids have. he slapped it back on my coffee still laughing and having good time. we laughed with him. coffee never spilled in the car and we made it to the airport shaking our heads and laughing. dis iz amerika.
